cherish the day

(robert glasper)

i must say, DAMN it feels good to simply paint something beautiful in a beautiful way. no conceptual intent, no layered meaning or media, no graduate art school pretension. just some really pretty flowers, really big. whew. alas, my 5x5 foot detail for the mural arts exhibition in june. still a little more to touch up, but it's just about resolved..

a couple illustrations i produced earlier this month as a Griot Apparel collaboration with the RFK Foundation. the collaboration didn't quite materialize, but this work will be the jump-off for a future RFK design we may release independently..

and, while i'm at it, another quick first glance..

Philadelphia Mural Training Program Exhibition

Details on my upcoming Mural Training Program Exhibition in Philly!

- - -

Please join us for the opening reception of works created by students in the Mural Training Program. The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is always looking to expand its pool of professional mural artists, and offers a Mural Training Program for artists who are interested in learning how to adapt their studio painting skills to public mural making. The goal of this training is to teach artists who already have strong painting foundations the skills to work collaboratively with communities to create public art murals.

The works in this exhibition feature works created by the students of this year’s class: Reut Asimini, Brian Baker, Julia Cocuzza, Marcine Franckowiak, Domenic Frunzi, Jean-Jacques Gabriel, Erica Harney, Erik Reinertsen, Lauren Rinaldi, David Staller, Polina Volfovich, and Emily White.

Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 13th, 5:30pm-7:30pm
The Lincoln Financial Mural Arts Center at the Thomas Eakins House
1727-29 Mt. Vernon Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130
215-685-0750

Exhibition will be on display from June 13 through 29th, 2012.

Mural Arts Training Program - Phase 1 complete!

every wednesday for the past 6 weeks i have commuted from Brooklyn to Philadelphia (back & forth, same day) for the official training program of the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. though it's been grueling to say the very least (greyhound express in my face twice a day shouting "you get what you pay for stupid!"), i've learned a TON! my teacher David McShane was fantastic and my classmates were all very cool. it was well worth all the time and discomfort in transit, as i am one significant step closer to my goal of being a muralist and professional public artist. now that the weekly night class portion is over, soon i'll be volunteering as an assistant, painting and installing some murals in Philly later this spring and summer. in addition, i'll finish my mural design and 5x5 foot detail painting for a group exhibition at the Mural Arts Program's Thomas Eakins House Gallery in mid June (details to come).

i'll post more after the opening in June, but here's a few random pics from the Thomas Eakins House's neighborhood (MAP headquarters) and MAP's studio space at Market East & 9th street:

my proposed site and mural idea: Chaconia (national flower, aka "Pride of Trindad and Tobago") at Nostrand Ave & Herkimer (Brooklyn):

Photos from Work/Space exhibition at Invisible Dog

The Invisible Dog's Artists Open Studios earlier this month was fantastic. i'm very proud and fortunate to be among these amazing artists in such a uniquely creative space. i regret not getting good shots everyone's studios, but here's a shot of my lil' space and many shots of the group exhibition Work/Space on the 3rd floor (without the mobs of people that blocked your view during the opening). thanks again to everyone that made it out!
